Statement

For this last project I wanted to try to incorporate a lot of the skills that I had previously learned throughout the semester. While my idea has changed quite a bit since I first thinking about this assignment, I feel that this is a good reflections of what I, as an artist, find fascinating about using processing as a tool.

I chose to use works of art over the course of the past few centuries was able to create new compositions with them. I wanted to see if these new compositions, which created pixelated gradients based off of the light and dark value of each pixel, would somehow relate to other works of art.

I used 5 pieces of work from 20 different artists and ran them through the program. Each gave me a new insight to the piece and somehow became almost like a fingerprint of the original image. I hope to expand on this further by using thousadnd of images and displaying them all together.

I chose to put the original image next to the new composition so that my viewers would be able to tell which piece of art the composition was being made from. I think this became an interesting composition in itself as many of the combinations resulted in some form of tension between the two.

It is hard to say whether a direct comparison between artwork can be made using this program, however I plan on expanding it further so that I can find out this answer. There are many more applications that this can be used for and I am hoping that I will not only expand on this, but have other people expand on this idea as well.
